The Consultation Process
At Thomas Meihofer Jewellery, we are more than salespeople, we are educators. As experts in every aspect of jewellery we can guide you in your custom jewellery design journey and advise you along the way. In the initial consultation process, we discuss all aspects of your custom jewellery design.
First, we clarify your design preferences and the diamond or gemstone sizes and shapes you love, along with the metal you would like your custom jewellery piece to be made from. The setting style and overall finish of the metal is also discussed along with your finger size if you’re designing a custom ring such as a bespoke engagement ring. We also talk about your ideal budget and the timeframe required to custom make the piece.
Selecting Diamonds and Gemstones
As qualified gemmologists, we are passionate about diamonds and gemstones. We source the most beautiful gems from our trusted suppliers in Australia and around the world. The diamond or gemstone used is the centrepiece of any piece of custom jewellery, so it is of upmost importance to us that we source the ultimate gemstone for you. We advise on the pros and cons of various diamonds and gemstones and their suitability for your custom jewellery design.
Once we have clarified the diamonds or gemstones you prefer, we provide a quote for the completed piece of jewellery with the various gems available for you to view. You can then decide which of the diamonds or gemstones you would like to view and compare. When we have collected the diamonds or gemstones you wish to view, we hold a second consultation and help to choose the perfect diamond or gemstone for your bespoke jewellery piece.
Select your metal
We use yellow, white and rose gold in our custom jewellery designs along with platinum and sterling silver. The choice of metal will depend on your preferred colour, the durability of the metal and its suitability for the custom jewellery design chosen. We can discuss the pros and cons of the various metals and purities of gold with you at your design consultation so you can make an informed choice.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does custom jewellery usually cost?
The cost of custom jewellery varies depending on design complexity, materials and craftsmanship. Each piece is individually quoted to reflect the gemstones, metal and design detail involved. Whether you would like a simple gold band or an intricate diamond setting, we tailor every design to suit your vision and budget.
How do I choose a custom jeweller?
Ask about their jewellery-making process and how each step impacts the finished product. Look for consistency in the design and style of the samples shown. If these don’t match your style, ask to see other designs. You could find hidden gems that catch your eye and suit what you’re looking for.
How do I determine my partner’s ring size for a bespoke engagement ring?
The best way to determine your partner’s ring size for a bespoke engagement ring is to visit us in-store, where our experts can size their finger accurately. However, we understand this isn’t always possible.
If they already have a ring that fits well on the intended finger, bringing it in can help us find the perfect size for their custom engagement ring. If the ring is worn on another finger, we can still estimate the correct size based on that. We also provide ring sizing tools and templates for your convenience.
What is the difference between 18ct, 14ct and 9ct gold?
In order to be workable and suitable for jewellery, gold must be mixed with various other metals to make an alloy. The carat (ct) of gold indicates its purity, 18ct gold contains 75% pure gold, 14ct has 58.5%, and 9ct includes 37.5%.
Higher gold content gives yellow gold a richer colour, though the difference in hardness between 18ct, 14ct, and 9ct yellow gold is minimal. 24ct and 22ct gold are occasionally used in jewellery, as it is relatively soft, making it not suitable for regular wear.
White gold contains different alloys to yellow gold, which makes it a whiter colour. White gold is also generally rhodium plated to give it a whiter, brighter tone. 18ct and 14ct white gold are similar in hardness and are suitable for daily wear, however 9ct white gold is softer and are not recommended for rings.
Rose gold contains different alloys to yellow and white gold, whih results in it having pinker tones. 18ct and 14ct rose gold are of similar hardness, while 9ct rose gold is softer and not recommended for rings.
If you’re not sure which metal to use for your bespoke engagement ring or custom jewellery piece, book a consultation with our team who can help you design the perfect custom jewellery piece for your needs.
What is the difference between white gold and platinum?
Platinum is a very pure metal, which is composed of 95% platinum and only 5% alloy. White gold and platinum look very similar in colour, although platinum is a denser metal, so a piece of custom jewellery in platinum feels heavier than the same design in gold. While white gold is rhodium plated to enhance its brightness, there is no need for this with platinum as it is a naturally whiter metal.
If you’re still not sure which to go with for your bespoke engagement ring or custom jewellery piece, book a consultation with our friendly team and we can help you decide.
What type of pearls do Thomas Meihofer use in custom pearl jewellery?
Our bespoke jewellery pieces typically feature luxurious South Sea pearls. We also incorporate premium Akoya and freshwater pearls into some of our custom-made jewellery designs depending on what is requested.
Do Thomas Meihofer use coloured gemstones in custom jewellery designs?
Absolutely. As passionate gemmologists, we love working with coloured gemstones in our custom jewellery designs, the rarer and more unique, the better. Each piece of bespoke jewellery is crafted with natural-coloured gemstones and is carefully designed to showcase the inherent beauty and individuality of every stone.
Do Thomas Meihofer use natural or lab-grown diamonds and what is the difference between them?
All the diamonds in our showroom are natural, however we use either natural diamonds or lab-grown diamonds in our custom jewellery designs depending on which you prefer.
The chemical and physical properties of natural and lab-grown diamonds are identical. The difference is in how they are formed.
Natural diamonds were formed 100 million to 1.2 billion years ago inside the earth’s crust when molten matter was exposed to extremely high temperature and pressure and cooled within a specific timeframe to form diamond crystals. The probability of diamonds forming was very small and the conditions for the formation of natural diamonds no longer exists within the earth. So the supply of natural diamonds is limited, making them relatively rare and of great intrinsic value.
Lab-grown diamonds, in contrast, are created in large quantities in factories with an endless capacity of making diamonds. The more lab-grown diamonds that are made, the less the intrinsic value of these gemstones. It was thought that lab-grown diamonds were a more ethical choice than natural diamonds, however current research is conflicted about this. The lab-grown diamond industry is currently unregulated and making lab-grown diamonds either uses massive amounts of energy or rare minerals which are mined.
Ultimately, the decision of whether to use a natural or lab-grown diamond is entirely up to you and we respect either choice. If you’re not sure to which to use for your custom engagement ring or bespoke jewellery piece, book a consultation with our friendly team who can help you design the perfect piece for your needs.
